SUMMARY

The Engineering function covers product costing, product design, packaging design, gauge & fixture design, testing, and overall engineering of electrical interconnects and related products for automotive, medical, transportation, and industrial applications. These products typically consist of molded plastic housings, stamped or drawn wire metal components, and various metal inserts such as mounting hardware. The candidate will assist in winning new business by creative and innovative design, accurate costing, and a good manufacturing knowledge of molding and stamping. The candidate will provide management, technical leadership and tactical direction to the Engineering team, based at the Dongguan plant, for the design, development and design-for-manufacturability of electrical connector products.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Oversee, guide and provide original input into design and/or development of a wide variety of electrical interconnect, and related products. Typical applications will be for the industrial, automotive, medical, transportation, appliance and consumer markets
2. Manage junior and senior design / product engineers, and provide technical direction to the design team with respect to design concepts, detailed mechanical design (including application of GD&T principles), materials, prototyping, tool validation and product testing
3. Develop innovative proposals/solutions for customer applications, and in support of requests for quotations
4. Turnkey design responsibility, from concept to production release, including:

• Creation of full product documentation, per APQP procedure
• Solid modeling (via CAD software)
• Tolerance stack-up analyses

1. Apply basic principles of interconnection theory, such as contact physics, heat transfer, and contact spring design and analysis (using Finite Element Analysis and manual tools)
2. Direct product validation efforts, including:

• Creation of test specifications
• Laboratory testing
• Analysis of data
• Preparation of reports and technical documentation

1. Facilitate APQP process in accordance with TS16949 and Company Quality procedures, and take responsibility for design elements of the procedures.
2. Lead or participate in global design initiatives, and assist other regions with regard to design activities
3. Provide sustaining engineering support for all current products
4. Attend materials review board (MRB) meetings, and make decisions on discrepant material
5. Employ design for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly principles in order to develop cost effective and competitive products
6. Work closely with Program Management and Global Engineering to ensure on-time delivery of programs
7. Work with Sales, Marketing and customers to define and prepare product specifications
8. Assist in technical sales efforts and make customer visits, write technical papers, and give presentations to customers and at industry conferences, as required
9. Other duties may be assigned from time-to-time by the Management team

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

1. A four-year mechanical or electronic engineering degree (Masters’ degree preferred)
2. A varied product background in the design of electrical/electronic interconnects
3. 10 years, minimum, connector engineering experience with responsibility for product development and documentation efforts. Press-fit terminal technology knowledge is highly desirable
4. Experience in solid modeling is required

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

1. Must be able to communicate well in English, in both written and verbal forms
2. Must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret general engineering periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, government regulations, supplier catalogs and specifications
3. Must be able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
4. Must have the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, vendors, and other Company personnel
